Kiss These ‘Cheeks’ Goodbye

AUTHOR: Frank Higgins | IN: 76ers | COMMENTS: None Yet

Former 76ers star and most recently, head coach, Maurice Cheeks has signed on as an assistant with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the upcoming season.  New Thunder head coach, Scott Brooks, who will replace former 76ers beloved coach Larry Brown, has given clipboards to both Cheeks and veteran coach Rex Kalamian (most recently with the Kings) this off season.  Cheeks was fired by the Sixers early last season after the team got off to a dismal start.  The year before however, Cheeks led the Sixers to a surprise playoff berth, only to falter in the first round (a trend of [...]

AUTHOR: Frank Higgins | IN: 76ers | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Charles Barkley was surely one of the most colorful and controversial characters ever to play professional sports in Philadelphia.  He is adored by Philadelphia fans all over for his wild antics and competitive nature.  Love him or hate him, Charles produces some of the most outrageous quotes in all of sports.  I have added a new page to the site titled, “Barkley’s Bits”.  Every couple days I will add another quote from the faucet known otherwise as the mouth of Charles Barkley.  Yes, hilarity will ensue.  Stay tuned.

Throw Your Hands in the Ayres

AUTHOR: Frank Higgins | IN: 76ers | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

This past week, first year head coach Eddie Jordan added Randy Ayres to the list of 76ers assistant coaches.  He joins the likes of associate head coach Mike O’Koren and fellow assistants Jim Lynam and Aaron McKie.  Ayres is a nice addition to the Sixers coaching staff and looks to make improvements on the defensive side of the ball, his supposed specialty.  He worked alongside Jordan as assistant coach with the Wizards organization and helped lead a turnaround of epic proportions.  The Wizards defense allowed nearly 105 points per game in the year prior to Ayres’ arrival and only allowed [...]

Slovenian Centerpiece?

AUTHOR: Frank Higgins | IN: 76ers | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

The Sixers have reportedly made a move to acquire free agent center, Primoz Brezec.  The 7′1” Slovenian played his ball in Italy last year and looks to make his return to the NBA with the 76ers.  The 29 year old veteran is expected to accept a one-year deal for the veteran’s league minimum, totaling a little over $1 million.  With 7 years of NBA experience, Brezec provides some experience and ability off the bench in relief of starting center, Samuel Dalmbert.  Brezec was a first round draft pick (27th overall) of the Indiana Pacers in 2000 and has bounced around [...]

NBA, Sixers’ Schedules Released

AUTHOR: Frank Higgins | IN: 76ers | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

The 2009-2010 NBA schedules were released and there is a lot to be excited about.  Right out of the gate, opening night October 27th, we have Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers playing hosts to the 2008 World Champion Boston Celtics.  There should be no love lost in this battle as we get to see Shaq in action for the first time as a Cav.  Then the Sixers get things started on October 28th with a big game against the defending Eastern Conference Champions, the Orlando Magic.  This should be an early test of the Sixers’ young stars and thus [...]

Poise and Ivey?

AUTHOR: Frank Higgins | IN: 76ers | COMMENTS: None Yet

During this offseason, the Sixers are hoping to piece together a championship caliber team.  One with a combination of young talent and poised veterans.  It is quite clear that eventually the Sixers will have to make a splash in the free agent pool if they want to drastically improve this team and get them over the hump.  At the same time, the Sixers have three players from last years roster that have yet to be signed.  Now, you can make that two players.  The Sixers have supposedly made an offer to 5 year veteran point guard Royal Ivey.  The specifics [...]

Sixers Miss Out on Warrick

AUTHOR: Frank Higgins | IN: 76ers | COMMENTS: None Yet

Unrestricted free agent Hakim Warrick signed a one year deal with the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.  The Sixers, as well as the Cavaliers, also expressed a great deal of interest in the free agent.  Warrick was the 19th overall pick in the 2005 draft by the Memphis Grizzlies and has spent the past four season with them.  The 6′9” forward played his college ball at Syracuse and won a national championship in his tenure.  The Sixers were looking to close a one year deal reportedly worth around 5 million dollars.  Warrick would have added some much needed depth to the [...]
