Ahh its that time again… The start of basketball season. Well, sort of. For some, preseason basketball is like doing Sudoku in the morning paper; You do it because its there, not because you truly enjoy doing it. For me, preseason basketball is more than that. Its my first chance to look at Evan Turner, Doug Collins, and how the rest of the 76ers will mesh together. While the Sixers roster is similar to last season’s, the team should look completely different.
My gut tells me that the Sixers will be a much improved basketball team than they were a year ago. The key will be a more balanced attack than we saw a year ago. Andre Iguodala is a proven player in this league, but he’s also proven that he cannot carry the load. Iguodala is at his best when hes digging in defensively and running, and thats exactly how Doug Collins will use him. There are 7 or 8 guys on this roster capable of scoring double digits every night, and in my opinion, that is how this team needs to win games.
I wrote a few weeks after we selected Turner #2 overall that although he is listed as a shooting guard, his skills are more similar to that of a point guard. I suggested that Turner would benefit from backing up Jrue Holiday and running point for the second unit. Despite the amount of ridicule I took for such an unfathomable idea, I believed then and I still believe that it is best for the team and for Turner. And apparently Doug Collins reads Sixer Sense, because that is exactly what is happening. Turner will come off the bench tonight and for the foreseeable future, leading a high scoring second unit.
It might be because I recently transferred back to college in Philadelphia, and I’m actually going to be able to attend some games this year, but I am more excited for this upcoming season than I’ve been in a long time.
