Hey, we’re introducing another weekly feature: the Wednesday Showdown. This is an “anonymous” player comparison, comparing Sixers to players around the league, though it will usually be someone from a team the Sixers play at some point during that week.
Player A – .496 Effective FG%*, 15.9 PER, 2.1 rebounds per game, 4.4 assists per game, 1.3 steals per game, 16.1 points per game, 84% FT%, 10 GS, 32 minutes per game.
Player B – .557 Effective FG%*, 18.4 PER, 5.1 rebounds per game, 1.1 assists per game, 1.0 steals per game, 12.8 points per game, 72% FT%, 1 GS, 26 minutes per game.
*Effective Field Goal Percentage takes threes into context. Since three is 1.5 times two, three pointers count as 1.5 field goals, and that is added into the normal FG%.
Well, if you haven’t guessed yet, Player B is the Sixer. That’s Thad Young, making his case for sixth man of the year. His PER is especially great for a guy that’s considered a reserve.
His opposite? Jason Terry, perennial sixth man contender (and former winner), who’s scoring puts him second on the Mavs. However, he shoots at a lower percentage than Thad overall (and thus has a lower PER) and isn’t considered a great defender.
LIVE UPDATE: Terry has scored 13 for the Mavs at halftime of tonight’s game (when I’m finishing this post). Thad has 6 and 5 boards.
