We all pretty much know the story, but the Sixers getting pub for their good play is always a nice thing to see. Here, Ben Petrick narrates the Sixers rise from the “middle class” to among the league’s best.
A couple of notes before you go read it:
- I didn’t bring up the Lou/Monta comparison. He did.
- He discusses the transformation from the Iverson-led Sixers to these guys from a star oriented team to a role-oriented team. I disagree a bit with that statement. Iverson’s best teams were essentially him surrounded by role players who did what they could to help the team win. I imagine Collins would operate the same way if they had a guy to go to offensively, like he did with MJ. But he is right about the 2006 team – from 2001 onward, the Sixers sought to give Iverson a star teammate instead of surrounding him with role guys like the Finals year.
