Rod Thorn: “Essentially, You Draft for Talent and You Trade for Need”

An interesting quote. This could mean a few things. Perhaps they are indeed ready to trade Iguodala to fill this need. I said this before. Sixers would probably either draft of trade Iguodala for the needed big man.

Is this the right idea?

This quote would make you believe that he doesn’t really follow the model of building a contender by drafting the pieces and letting them grow together.

And so, Thorn will draft what I assume is the best player available and then move maybe those same players to get other players that could plug up the holes/needs. In an earlier post, I talked about how Thorn knew about the needs of this team. He is now explaining how he’s going to fill this need. The quote explains itself. Perfect.

There are two glaring holes on the roster but this team is certainly not stable enough to ignore a player if he doesn’t fit a need. A team like the Heat would draft for need (even winners have needs). A team like the Bobcats would certainly take the best man available.

So don’t be surprised if Sixers draft based on talent and not need.
