So the All-Star ballots were released today revealing 4 Sixers up for voting: Jrue Holiday, Spencer Hawes, Andrew Bynum, and Thad Young. Now the NBA recently said that they removed the Center position from the ballot. So, for folks like Bynum and Hawes, they are listed as “Front Court”. Looking at the ballot form, Front Court is the Small Forward, Power Forward, and Center positions. But now it’s just one name for each of those. Guards are still guards. And really, that’s kinda what those 3 positions are called anyway. So it’s not some big revolutionary thing by the NBA.
Holiday has been very solid but a key problem for him is that there are a lot of other good Guards in the East that are better than him. Not that Holiday isn’t good, but there are other players. Just looking at the PG spot you have Rajon Rondo, Deron Williams, and while he’s injured, Derrick Rose. Holiday may never in his career be better than those guys. Would he be picked by a coach? Maybe. But he’ll probably never be a starter.
Thad Young is probably not an All-Star. I don’t think he’s ever going to reach that type of playing level, whereas Holiday can play at an All-Star player but so can a lot of other players. Thad’s just not good enough.
Andrew Bynum is on the ballot so he could be voted as a starter. Problem is, he’s scheduled to be out until January. About a week or so after that, the ballots will probably close. So fans would basically be voting for somebody they haven’t seen. This happens sometimes. That’s one critic some have with fans voting for players. Voting for people maybe because of career accomplishments instead of really what’s going on during the season. I vote on a season by season basis.
And then there’s Spencer Hawes. Why on earth Spencer is on the ballot escapes me. He’s not an All-Star. He never will be. It makes no sense. He wouldn’t even be an injury replacement. Shame on the NBA.
But, at the end of the day, I will be voting for all 4 of these guys because I’m that kind of obsessive Sixers fan. And you should vote for them too. All players healthy, it would’ve been an epic battle of Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum. I would have loved it. But it would be borderline stupid to actually allow Bynum to be a starter and I’m assuming the NBA will be controlling that situation. Here’s the link. Vote for your Sixers or go ahead and vote for somebody else.
