The Philadelphia 76ers are yet to hire a new head coach. There has been controversial reports over the last few weeks, which have confused the fans. A few weeks ago we heard that the team was down to two candidates, Brett Brown, and Michael Curry. It finally seemed like they were down to their top guys, but then a few days ago, a new report came out. It was reported the Sixers would be interviewing the Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach David Vanterpool. One has to think Sam Hinkie is creating a new evil plan for a head coach. Or, one has to think that he does not feel there are any strong candidates, so he is taking his time. There are many factors as to why Sam Hinkie has yet to hire a coach and here are a few of them.
The first reason comes as an obvious one. The team is clearly looking to “tank” next year and this just another example. This team is setting its self up for the future, and has no inclination to win right now. If the vacancy at head coach still hasn’t convinced you that the Sixers have given up all hope on next year, then I don’t know what will. Since no one is really sticking out to them, they will take their time and keep their sights set on a losing record for next year.
The next reason is also very simple. The Sixers are yet to find a coach that they truly believe will lead the team in the future. Since they are clearly a developing team, they want a coach that grow with them. They want someone who is young, and can become the new face of the franchise. If they cannot find that guy, they will have to find a short term replacement, and start the process over looking for a guy they truly fall in love with.
The last reason comes as a sign of hope for Sixers fans. Sam Hinkie is devising a plan to bring in a college coach, or an experienced great that no one sees coming. This is wishful thinking, and seems unlikely, but its fun to imagine. Hinkie has shocked us once, so why not again? You can’t put it past him since the man is so sneaky. It would be a nice surprise if Hinkie brought in a big name, but Sixers fans should prepare for an assistant coach to step in.
There is much confusion about the Sixers head coaching job, and we have no idea when it might get resolved. Sure, the team is not going to be good next year, but they need a coach. While I expect the team to select a coach before the summer ends, my guess for who is chosen is as good as yours. Sam Hinkie is a mystery man so Philly fans are forced to keep guessing. With the summer winding down, hopefully the Sixers have their guy sooner than later.
