76ers Not Pursuing Free Agents in Summer

Jimmer! Lance Stephenson! Melo! LeBron?!

Don’t even think about it. The Sixers aren’t interested. The Sixers have no plans of signing any big name, or little name, free agents this summer. Here’s what Brett Brown had to say about the situation (via

“It’s all aligned to we are not going to be pursuing free agents for a while,” said Sixers coach Brett Brown, whose franchise plans to build a new practice facility in two seasons. “We are about development. Once the alignment with development collides with a bunch of other things in the program, then you can start talking about free agents.
“No free agent is going to want to come to Philadelphia at this stage. Why would a good free agent want to come in and be a part of a rebuild?”
“You say, ‘Oh there’s a program of the future in an unbelievable city,’ ” Brown said. “That’s the evolution of the program aligned with the practice facility, which is two years away.”
Well, Brown is right. I don’t think any free agent will look at Philly this off-season and make it a priority to come here. If the Sixers land Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker, that could sway some free agents. However, no one with a huge name is going to be attracted to Philadelphia. Sure, the future is attractive, but the present is not. To be honest, if you have Noel, Carter-Williams and Wiggins/Paker, should the Sixers really want to bring in a big name? The focus next season should be strictly on developing those three. Any free agent could only take minutes and shots away from our young stars.
Don’t expect any big names to come to Philly this off-season. Everyone should be focused on the draft and the lottery, which is about a month away, by the way. This is a rebuild — which will take a few years. We’ve gotten through this season and we will get through the rest too. Who cares about all this losing when the Sixers are winning championships in five years?
