Stay or Go: Henry Sims

Here at The Sixer Sense, we’ve decided to focus on next season and not talk about this season much anymore. That said, the heads here have decided to launch a “Stay or Go” series for each player. We’ll be looking at the players’ season and deciding if he’s somebody we’d like to see the Sixers keep for next season and possibly beyond. First up is Henry Sims, the interesting center from Georgetown.

Sims came as part of a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philly sent Spencer Hawes over there. Sims, was the prize of the trade, since the second-round picks can’t be convened until the draft. So far, he hasn’t disappointed. In his 16 games here, he’s averaged 10.2 points and 6.9 rebounds. He’s even got 2.1 assists and a steal per game. He’s shooting 45 percent from the field. This is all in playing 26.1 minutes per game

Considering that he’s gone from a seldom used center with the Cavs and Pelicans last season, to being a beast down low for the Sixers, I’ll give him a grade of B. Here’s a guy that can rebound on both sides of the ball as well as defend. He’s tall and can threaten a shot. He’s shown a nice jumper…okay, not “nice” as the release looks awkward. But, he’s shown that he can take some mid-range shots and hit them with some space. No, he’s not going to stretch the floor. But, you don’t want to leave him open all of the time.

Stay or Go?

That’s the goal of this post and series, right? Some people obviously won’t agree but, I like Sims and think he should get another run.

The big argument is that this team is trying to build a fast paced team that can run up and down the floor. But, when I think of the teams in the league who have decided to go that route, I rarely see championships. Things always slow down in the playoffs. Heck, look at the Sixers’ recent history. Remember “Run With Us”? We all ran right into a brick wall of the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic. The game slowed down and we didn’t have any size or half court game.

You could say that the game itself is heading in that direction. Guys like Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett will never thrive again. There’s no need for a dominant center to work it like Shaq.

Oh-no, Sims is not that guy. Don’t get me wrong. He’s not gonna be our championship center. But, I like Sims as a backup center. He may not be the fastest, but that’s okay. He does other things well that the team will need. If ya feel like he’s simply not gonna do it for ya, then fine. Ultimately, Henry Sims should remain with the Sixers for another year. He’s showed a lot of hustle and energy that no one else on this roster (save Thaddeus Young) has shown.

Okay…so, if you had to pick, would Sims stay or go?
