According to Chad Ford’s latest mock draft (of ESPN), the Sixers will be taking Jabari Parker with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Ford has Andrew Wiggins being taken by the Milwaukee Bucks with the No. 1 overall pick, so Parker is the obvious selection if the Sixers stay at the No. 2 slot. The 2014 NBA Draft Lottery will take place in less than a month, where it will be revealed if the Sixers tanking scheme was a success. The Sixers are guaranteed a top-five pick.
Why does Ford have the Sixers taking Parker?
Analysis: Ownership deemed this season a success after finishing with the second-worst record in the league. That should be all you need to know about whether they were really tanking. If they end up with the No. 2 overall pick, forgive them for being a little bummed if Wiggins is off the board. However, Parker would be a nice consolation prize. He’d give the Sixers a guy who could score 20 points a night right out of the gate. And the Sixers have the length and athleticism to protect Parker on defense with Michael Carter-Williams in the backcourt and Nerlens Noel in the middle. Embiid is a dark horse here, though. He’s not a perfect fit up front with Noel — they are different players, and both are pretty raw — but it would be an intriguing teaming nonetheless.
Parker does seem like the most NBA ready prospect out of the main lottery selections. Lets get this right, Wiggins or Parker, neither will be a let down. If the Sixers fall outside of that realm, then it will most likely be considered a let down. If the Sixers do land Jabari Parker, let’s hope that Ford is right and MCW and Nerlens Noel can mask Parker’s obvious defensive woes. On the other hand, imagine the defensive stronghouse the Sixers would be with Carter-Williams, Noel and Wiggins? Good lord. Regardless, the main prize here is Wiggins or Parker, but everyone knows this.
