Sometimes it’s nice to dip into the 76ers deep history on Throwback Thursday’s like today. Today, we have 76ers great Charles Barkley, who spent his first eight seasons in the NBA with the 76ers.
In his eight season with Philly, Barkley averaged 23.3 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Some people — especially the younger crowd — may correlate Barkley with his antics on Inside the NBA on TNT, while forgetting how dominate Charles was in his prime. His time with the 76ers is evident to how great his career truly was, even though he doesn’t get the respect he deserves.
Barkley carried the 76ers to the playoffs for six seasons, averaging 22.4 points and 13.1 rebounds in 51 playoff games. Although Sir Charles wasn’t able to take the 76ers to the promise land and win an NBA Championship, no blame should be placed on any players during the “Jordan Era” of the game.
The video below is Charles Barkley dominating against the Utah Jazz and famed big man Karl Malone. Barkley drops 43 points in total during this contest. Watching a 76ers great big man like Barkley dominate makes one wonder how long it will take Nerlens Noel or Joel Embiid to develop into this type of talent. But, for now, let’s take a dip into the past and enjoy the glory days.
