Game Recap: Summer League Los Angeles Lakers Vs. Philadelphia 76ers

70. 20. Final. 69. 93

The July 9th match-up featured more than just the two worst teams of the 2015-2016 NBA season.  The game was the first and very anticipated meeting where the two top rated prospects of the 2016 NBA Draft would face off in direct competition.  It was Ben Simmons who won the battle during the game, but it was the Los Angeles Lakers who won the war, eeking out a victory 70-69, off of the clutch last second three point shot from the hands of point guard D’Angelo Russell.

The game also featured the inclusion of veterans shooting guard Nik Stauskas and small forward Jerami Grant, who both exhibited rust in combining for a meager 22 percent shooting (4-18) from the floor, and just 25 percent (2-8) from long distance.  This game also recorded a surprising downtick of fortune for the relatively hot-handed Christian Wood, who ended the game with just four points on 16.7 percent shooting (1-6) and being blanked on long distance (0-3).

But there were some high points for the Philadelphia 76ers.  Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot showed signs of why he was such a steal in the draft at 24, scoring ten points on 80 percent shooting from the floor (4-5), including 67 percent from three-point range (2-3), as well as delivering excellent defense against his counterpart, Brandon Ingram, holding the second selection from the 2016 NBA draft to seven points on 25 percent shooting (3-12), including failing to hit from downtowon (0-3).

Leading all scorers in the game was D’Angelo Russell’s 22 points (8-20) which include his 33 percent shooting from beyond the arc.  He also dished out five assists and pulled in four rebounds to help seal the win.  His biggest score was the three pointer to win the game at the buzzer.

T.J. McConnell led the Philadelphia 76ers with 12 points, six assists and four rebounds.  As stated, the team was aided by Luwawu’s 10 points, as well as 10 points from both Jerami Grant and Richaun Holmes.

Players of the Game

The Philadelphia 76ers  rookie Ben Simmons continues to impress more with each passing game.  Against the Lakers, he once more flirted with a triple double – scoring eight points, eight assists, and ten rebounds.

Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot deserves to be included in featured players as well.  He has already exhibited fearlessness in his shooting and driving to the basket.  On Saturday evening, he demonstrated his penchant for working both sides of the court: minimizing the high octane offense shooting of Brandon Ingram, while showing cool efficiency when worked his offense.

Looking Ahead

The Philadelphia 76ers will face the Chicago Bulls on Sunday, July 10th. The Los Angeles Lakers face the Golden State Warriors Monday, July 11th. Also, the 76ers could see Dario Saric on the court soon, as he has been inked to a deal with Philadelphia. Saric is hoped to be joining the summer league roster in time for the third game in Las Vegas.

Next: Philadelphia 76ers should utilize small ball

While many teams are including last year’s rookies in summer league, the Philadelphia 76ers marquis returning rookie, center Jahlil Okafor, continues to rehab his knee. The other marquis rookie for the 76ers, center Joel Embiid, continues to show marked progress, although he has been withheld from summer league play as a precaution.
