Philadelphia 76ers Past Asset Accumulation austerity of the past could land superstar Pacer Paul George by the NBA Trade deadline

The Philadelphia 76ers have been on an asst accumulation track for the past three years. Unrelated, but predictably, Paul George finds himself unexpectedly on the NBA Trade block. Now the Indiana Pacers are testing the trade market for Paul George.

What is the link?  Asset Accumulation.  While it’s impossible to predict which NBA superstar will land on the trade block, there is some pattern of certainty that one will land once every third year.

How does that happen?

Superstars have limited windows to win championships.

Without diving into complex basketball analytics, it’s a matter of timing.  NBA stars have a short four to seven year window to land upon a championship team.  Once the player finds himself in his prime, his salary demands hit the ceiling.  Now, that team has at most two years to assemble a championship worthy team around that player before the team loses the ability to compete.

Paul George is one such player, but the Indiana Pacers have struggle to assemble that championship team around him.  The whispers of the Pacers entertaining offers surfaced a year ago when the team moved him to the power forward role.  Then, the package offered would have been two first round picks (LA Lakers and Miami Heat Picks), Jahlil Okafor, Robert Covington and a future 2nd round pick.  Would the 76ers offer a similar package today?  Would the Pacers take such a deal?

If the Pacers truly are considering blowing up the team, only the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics could offer competitive packages. The Celtics have been rather stingy with their offers, despite the surplus of draft picks in the hands of a playoff team.

We know the Pacers would like Jahlil Okafor.  We also know the Philadelphia 76ers have the assets: both picks and players, to entice the Pacers to make a deal. This could be the mega-deal we’ve awaited folks.

What a ride folks.  We know the Pacers are interested in getting Okafor. Could it be a two way conversation to deal Paul George to the Philadelphia 76ers?

I won’t make that leap of faith quite yet, but I think it’s a topic that is being discussed adamantly by both sides now.
