Tonight, for The Sixer Sense I will be giving you a player profile of Philadelphia’s own Maalik Wayns.  Many people were shocked that the junior point guard out of Villanova University went undrafted in this past summer’s NBA Draft.

I was shocked too because at Villanova, Wayns was a star in the making and in his last season there he made his presence known. Wayns averaged 33.6 minutes per game, scored 17.6 points per game, and dished out 4.6 assists per game. He was Villanova’s number option at all times. But if you have been following Wayns’ career you would know he has been doing this since he was playing high school basketball at Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia.

Fast forward to the present, Wayns is now playing for his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers. With the Sixers so far, he has outperformed the competition and is showing head coach Doug Collins and the staff that he deserves to be the team’s backup point guard.

By the way he is playing this preseason; he will be the backup point guard. In the preseason so far, Wayns is averaging 12.4 points per game and that is top five on the team. He is also second on the team in assists with 4.8 assists per game this preseason only behind starting point guard Jrue Holiday. In the previous, preseason game on Friday night versus the Brooklyn Nets, Wayns had 10 points and 3 assists in 18 minutes of game action as the Sixers went on to beat the Nets.

Only time will tell what the young rookie point guard can do with the Sixers this season but if he can improve over time then he just might be playing himself into a possible role in the Rookies vs. Sophomores Game during All-Star Weekend.

So I think it’s safe to say that the Sixers are done with off-season moves. Not too many people have been happy with the moves or lack of. To me, they pretty much stayed where they are, maybe getting a little worse. They didn’t show a great deal of a plan. I’ll save my thoughts for later. Right now, let’s look at the players lost and gained:

Lost: Elton Brand, Lou Williams, Jodie Meeks, Tony Battie, Sam Young, Craig Brackins

Gained: Dorell Wright, Nick Young, Kwame Brown, Arnett Moultrie, Maurice Harkless, Royal Ivey, Maalik Wayns

You can’t say the Sixers made drastic improvements. If I had to grade it all, I would have to go with a D. The main point was to trade Iguodala. This didn’t happen. Then, they were suppose to spend their money wisely after amnestying Brand. Kwame Brown and Nick Young. I guess you can toss Ivey and Wayns in too. I wasn’t expecting the Sixers to improve. Trading Iguodala will make this team much worse before they get better. I’m just disappointed that they decided to sign players that the team didn’t really need. Now we have a log jam for the big man rotation and wing players.

Some would say having too many good players is better than having too few. Problem is, the Sixers didn’t sign good players. Kwame Brown isn’t a good player. He’s a decent back-up Center who is starting. Number two, there are still holes on this team and so it doesn’t make much sense to load up in a mediocre way while you leave open holes. Ivey is a nice player but Sixers need to do better. Sixers still need a consistent scorer. You have a log jam at the SF/SG spot. I thought trade Iguodala for one need and sign another need from the Elton Brand money.

That’s why I give them a D grade. Not because of what they did, but because of what they didn’t do.
