In order to execute a buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies, the two-time NBA champion Kentavious Caldwell-Pope agreed to give back $3.9 million to the team, according to HoopsHype's Michael Scotto.
Caldwell-Pope will soon clear waivers, and when he does, he is expected to execute a one-year contract to join the Philadelphia 76ers. When he signs, the veteran wing is expected to go on the books for the same amount of money he sent back to the Grizzlies.
The Sixers are getting a player with career averages of 11.0 points, 1.1 steals, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists, with 36.5% averages from three on the veteran's minimum.
The Sixers are worth the financial sacrifice
Doesn't it feel good, Philly? Multi-time champions are making financial sacrifices just to get to the City of Brotherly Love, with hopes of competing for an NBA championship.
While Philadelphia has always been a strong market, it surely wasn't seen as a top hot spot in the past. There are many factors that play into markets being desirable, and it doesn't always have to do with basketball reasons. In this case, the Sixers have one of the more desirable rosters on paper.
A star-studded starting five
Three out of five starters were already on the team heading into the offseason. Tyrese Maxey just wrapped up a season where he was an All-Star for the second time in his career. The ex-Kentucky standout has proven to be one of the top guards in the league, with or without the ball in his hands.
Joel Embiid didn't earn All-Star honors last year (though his snub status was up for debate), but the star center is clearly one of the best bigs when he's healthy and available. Then, the second-year guard VJ Edgecombe just earned respect as the third-best rookie throughout the 2025-2026 season. The NBA world is convinced he's poised to take a positive step next year.
The Sixers outdid themselves this offseason. When they realized that Paul George hadn't been consistently available or living up to his expensive contract, they struck a deal to acquire the superstar forward Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics. Adding LeBron James was just the cherry on top.
The Sixers went from looking stuck to massively improved in all of the right places. They are now the type of team that former champions gladly give money back for and celebrate with a spontaneous dance on the golf course when they find out they are headed to Philly.
