2013 11th Overall Pick- Michael Carter-Williams (G Syracuse)
Poor MCW. Every rookie gets a chance to prove he’s worthy of being a cornerstone player, and MCW thought he did by winning a Rookie of the Year award, but that wasn’t the case. MCW had a great season and a half with the Sixers, averaging 16 points, 6.7 assists, and 6.2 rebounds since he was drafted here, but Hinkie had his mind set on a plan that MCW wasn’t apparently a part of. Still, winning a ROY award is impressive and being the first to do it in a Sixer jersey since the great Allen Iverson means a lot to the city of Philadelphia.
Draft Grade: B
Michael Carter Williams had a nice run with the Sixers but he wasn’t on the team long enough for me to call this pick ‘great’. Also there are some big players the Sixers missed in this draft that brings the grade down. Still a very nice pick considering he brought some type of hardware to the city.
Who They Should’ve Taken: Giannis Antentokounmpo
This one hurts a little. Giannis is really killing it in Milwuakee. This kid is only 20-years-old and he is balling like a vet. Antetokounmpo is averaging 10 points, 5.6 rebounds, one steal, and one block per game over his first two seasons, while showing an incredible amount of potential. The Greek Freak’s body type and skill set is what is most intriguing about him. He is 6’11” but can play positions 1-4 on the court. He literally is a freak of nature.
Antetokounmpo’s versatility both defensively and offensively would fit perfectly with Coach Brett Brown’s scheme. The Sixers really missed on a potential superstar with Giannis, who was selected 15th overall. The Sixers also passed on another great youngster with a great nickname in Frenchman Rudy Gobert (27th overall), otherwise known as the “Stifle Tower.”
