Does He Have a Future in Philly?
Thomas Robinson is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. It was reported that he had interest from about six or seven teams after he was bought out by Denver, so he should receive a good amount of calls this summer.
Robinson may never become a starter, but he has upside as a backup big. He’s a solid rebounder and now it’s about getting him into the right situations where he can be a consistent and effective player. Without a jumper, Robinson should be constantly moving on offense, setting screens and diving to the rim. He should make his living off of rebounds and loose balls to get him easy buckets on the offensive end. If he can be committed to this kind of role, he can develop into a solid big off the bench.
The Sixers are a great situation for Robinson because he’s going to get consistent minutes and the coaches are really going to work with him to try and develop his game. If the Sixers could work an elbow or baseline jumper into T-Rob’s arsenal, it would be huge for him.
Also, Robinson plays hard all the time and when trying to build a culture, he’s the kind of player you want around. At worst, Robinson’s career projection is Reggie Evans, a fifth big whose role is to rebound and provide energy. At the right price, his potential as a first or second big off the bench is worth the gamble.
Robinson re-signing with the Sixers would be good for both sides; the Sixers would have a big off the bench that they could further develop and Robinson would be in a situation where he would get consistent minutes. Ultimately, T-Rob is back in a Sixers uniform next season.
