Philadelphia 76ers 2016 NBA Draft Update

Winless but not wanting, the Philadelphia 76ers have laid the foundation for a tremendous haul in the 2016 NBA draft. Is it too soon to begin 2016 NBA Draft discussions? Perhaps, but with the weekend shutout for Philadelphia sports teams, it’s as good a topic as any to discuss. So what are we looking at?

For starters, the Philadelphia 76ers get their first round draft pick – currently projected to be the number one pick in the 2016 NBA draft.

2016 first round draft pick from L.A. Lakers
L.A. Lakers’ 1st round pick to Philadelphia (via Phoenix)( 1-3 protected) in 2016 and (1-3 protected) in 2017. Completely unprotected in 2018.  Currently the L.A. Lakers sit at 2-10, good for 27th best team in the NBA.  That should project them to pick at the four spot in the 2016 NBA draft.

2016 first round draft pick from Miami
Miami’s 1st round pick to Philadelphia (via Cleveland) (1-10 protected) in 2016 and unprotected in 2017.  Currently the Miami Heat is enjoying an excellent start to the 2015-16 NBA season.  Their 8-4 record this early has them as the 5th best team in the NBA.  That places this pick at the 25 pick, and would likely kick in a swap with another team.    Philadelphia may swap the 2016 pick to Golden State, which we will discuss momentarily.

2016 first round draft pick from Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City’s 1st round pick to Philadelphia (via Cleveland to Denver) (1-15 protected) in 2016 and (1-15 protected) in 2017; if Oklahoma City has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Philadelphia by 2017, then Oklahoma City will instead convey its 2018 2nd round pick and 2019 2nd round pick to Philadelphia.  Currently the Okalahoma City Thunder are enjoying a 7-5 2015-16 NBA season, which projects them at the 17th pick of the 2016 NBA draft.

Philadelphia may swap the 2016 pick to Golden State, which we will discuss momentarily.

Philadelphia second round draft pick

The Sixers traded away their second round draft pick to the Boston Celtics via Miami.

2016 second round draft pick from Denver

Denver’s 2016 2nd round pick to Philadelphia.  This currently projects as the 41st pick.
UPDATE:  The Philadelphia 76ers traded this pick, and their 2017 2nd round pick to the New Orleans Pelicans for point guard Ish Smith.

PLUS, the Sixers have the rights to swap draft picks with either the Golden State Warriors or the Sacramento Kings.

2016 first round draft pick from Golden State
Philadelphia has the right to swap the less favorable of Miami’s 2016 1st round pick protected for selections 1-10 and Oklahoma City’s 2016 1st round pick protected for selections 1-15, or either of these two picks if only one falls outside its protected range, for Golden State’s 2016 1st round pick (if both the Miami pick and the Oklahoma pick fall within their protected ranges, then Philadelphia’s swap right and Golden State’s obligation to Philadelphia will be extinguished)

As it currently stands, Golden State is picking last in the NBA draft, so no swap will occur.

2016 first round draft pick from Sacramento

Philadelphia has the right to swap its 2016 1st round pick for Sacramento’s 2016 1st round pick protected for selections 11-30 (if the Sacramento pick falls within its protected range, then Philadelphia’s swap right and Sacramento’s obligation to Philadelphia will be extinguished)

As it stands now, Philadelphia will select long before the Sacramento Kings selection, so no swap will occur.

So if the world ended today, and the lottery placed teams into their natural selection spot, the Philadelphia 76ers would be selecting at the 1st, 4th, 17th and 25th spots in round one.  In round two, the Philadelphia 76ers would likely be selecting at the 11 spot.  That’s five new faces and if the Sixers select wisely could equate to several key starters.  Factor in the anticipated return to health of Joel Embiid and from international play Dario Saric and this Sixers team’s deck begins to stack up.

In 2016-2017, the Philadelphia 76ers will not be off the hook if they have a prolongued losing streak.    But by then, the team will likely not experience one.  The team will have, at this point, a minimum of SEVEN NEW FACES.  Saric, Embiid, four players from round one and one player (if not traded or stashed overseas) in round two.  That’s a lot of new talent.  That’s enough talent to make up an entirely new basketball team.
