The step-over in the 2001 NBA Finals
Although the Philadelphia 76ers never were able to win a championship with Allen Iverson leading the team, he did lead them to some very memorable moments in a season that nearly resulted in a championship win. In 2001, the Sixers had a fantastic season, boasting a regular season record of 56-26. They were the clear favorites in the Eastern Conference, and fairly easily moved their way into the NBA Finals that season.
They found themselves facing off against the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals, and were seen as the underdog for sure. In the first game, though, AI made it clear that he wasn’t going to make it easy for the Lakers to claim a title.
Iverson popped in the Staples Center in game one, scoring 48 points and leading the Sixers to a game one advantage, but the most memorable moment of the game was when Iverson hit a huge two pointer, his defender Tyronn Lue fell down, and he literally stepped over him.
At the time, it seemed like such a small occurrence, but it has since been recognized as one of the most memorable Iverson and Sixer moments of all time.
This is a key moment in Iverson’s history, and one that has been printed on posters, t-shirts, and more. No Sixers fan should ever forget it.
