5. Willie Burton 50 Point Game
When you think of Philadelphia 76ers that scored 50 or more points in a single game you think of household names like Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham and Allen Iverson. However, on December 13th 1994, Willie Burton shocked all in attendance at the Spectrum, including himself, as he lead the 76ers to a 105-90 win against the Miami Heat while dropping a career high 53 points on the team that released him a month earlier. He went 12-19 from the field and an impressive 24-28 from the free throw line while shattering his previous career high of 28 points.
The Heat selected Burton with the 9th pick in the 1990 NBA Draft. His play earned him Second Team All-NBA Rookie honors. He was signed by the 76ers after being cut by the Heat earlier in the season.
Burton only played one season for the 76ers where he set career highs for minutes played (29.5) and points scored (15.3). He also averaged 3.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists. He played in 53 games and started 31 of them.
Following the 1994-1995 season, Burton went to play overseas in the CBA, USBL, IBL and had a couple of brief stints in the NBA from 1996 to 1999 with the Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs and Charlotte Hornets. Many NBA fans across the world could not tell you who Willie Burton is but 76er fans will always remember him for his 53 point performance.
