Moses Malone -16
The late, great Moses Malone was the thunder to Dr. J’s lighting during the 76ers championship run in 1983. The finals MVP performance of that series sweep of the LA Lakers cemented Malone as a Sixer great forever.
Although he only played 5 years in Philadelphia over the course of a 20-year pro career, Malone is a city legend. He scored over 7500 points with Philly, averaging 21 PPG. He was the rock of the front-court for many teams appearing in at least 71 games for his team from ‘78-’92
Moses’ post moves were easy on the eyes, and his fundamentals on both sides of the ball were crisp, and sound. He had excellent footwork on the block, and often times made defenders look silly.
He was no slouch on the boards either. Malone brought in 15+ rebounds per game in ‘83 including 5.9 offensive boards which led to put pack after put back. If the Doctor happened to miss one of his signature high-flying layups, Malone was always right there to clean up and get the basket.
The 76ers announced they will retire Malone’s jersey at the Wells Fargo Center just a few weeks back, and although it’s probably long overdue, it will be nice to finally see #2 hanging in the rafters alongside #6.
