Tony Wroten is a former Philadelphia 76er. What’s he been up to since he was released earlier this year?
Tony Wroten is a fourth-year NBA player who has had a bit of a rough ride getting his career on a solid path in the NBA. Wroten, over the last three years, played 110 combined games with the Philadelphia 76ers, but only appeared in 8 this season before being let go.
Due to an ACL injury that he was recovering from — alongside Kendall Marshall — Wroten was not available to play this season until December 5th. Once he returned to the floor, his impact was not as good as some expected it to be, but he was still allowing others around him to succeed.
Early on, he did well against the Denver Nuggets, despite the Sixers ultimately losing that game. Wroten, although overall improving the offense that game, did not statistically do much only scoring 4 points and dishing out 3 assists. This statistical emptiness was a large reason he was let go. He did have a stint of three straight games with double-digit points, but when he scored, he failed to move the ball.

This season, in those 8 games with Philly, Wroten averaged 8.4 points, 2.5 assists, and 3.6 turnovers per game.
Wroten was released to make room for Ish Smith on Christmas Eve this year. Wroten was relieved of his duties while he was home in Washington state visiting family, and didn’t find work for quite a while after that. He would flirt around with the New York Knicks for a while — just about every week there was a new rumor of him meeting or talking with the team, it seemed — before finally signing a contract with them on March 16th.
Wroten thanked the Sixers in an Instagram post announcing his signing with the Knicks.
"First I’d like to give a big thanks to the Philadelphia organization for giving me the opportunity to prove that I was good enough to play and have success in this league. Thanks coach Brown for being so patient with me and helping me develop. 2nd I want to thank the NY Knicks organization and Mr phil Jackson for giving me another opportunity to play this game again at the highest level and in a city that loves basketball more than any other city."
Tony has always had a lingering desire to play in New York and in Madison Square Garden, and many Sixers fans were happy to see this former Sixer get a chance with the Knicks. In reality, it’s going to be hard for Wroten to get minutes there — he has yet to play for the Knicks this year — but it’s good to see him getting a shot.
Wroten, since he got to New York, has made some friends. Apparently, Kristaps Porzingis told him that he was the best FIFA player, which Tony has taken issue with. Wroten challenged ‘Staps statement on Twitter, and is waiting for a chance to show him what he’s got.
Lots of us miss Tony, but I’m happy he isn’t becoming a D-League NBA memory and is at least finding a spot on an NBA team.
