Sinking in Popularity, Cowboy Loving Chris Christie Slams Sixers Practice Facility

The Republican Party said “no thanks” to the presidential hopeful Governor of New Jersey. Still, Chris Christie is a determined, if not misguided, man who finds a way to wiggle his way onto the sports page.  Whether he’s showing a tad too much bro loving to those crazy Joneses, owners of the Dallas Cowboys, or simply opening his mouth and inserting his Philadelphia professional sports hating foot, he seems to pop up in the headlines like dandelions on a golf course fairway . For example, he seemed to have a lot of close warm feelings to share with those Joneses, Daddy Jerry and brother Stephen, but I have to warn you, it isn’t pretty:

So it goes.

If you are a Dallas Cowboys fan in the heart of Philadelphia Eagles territory, you either avoid conflict, or you embrace it.  Christie does even more, he seems to seek it out to make the headlines – ala Skip Bayless without the enchanting sing songy voice and popularity.   In any case, the Philadelphia 76ers organization has invested a great deal of time and energy into the economy of Camden, New Jersey.  You see, they’ve begun construction on a state-of-the-art practice facility, the flagship of the championship aspirations of the Philadelphia 76ers.  It’s design is almost cutting edge architecturally: with swimming, dining, gymnasium and two full sized basket ball courts – all in open spaces and designed to allow visitors to observer the activity from virtually anywhere in the building.

The city of Camden will now benefit from a number of new construction and administrative jobs in an economy that needs the help, from the tax dollars of a major new business as well as those new employee payroll taxes, and a marketing draw to aid other local businesses.   Most politicians would see that positive energy, and try to add a bit of positivity of their own.

Others, in the absence of nothing good to say, would simply learn to say nothing.

Then there are the fools.  The people who could opt to say nothing and make you guess as to their low IQ.  Instead, they open their mouths and remove all guesswork.

Then there is Chris Christie, fresh from his political spanking by mogul Donald Trump, in a desperate effort to regain headlines, offered this to the public:

I have no political statement to make here. I merely believe that there is a certain threshold of etiquette to maintain as a public figure. Trolling a local favorite sports team by a public figure is as classy as knocking schoolbooks from the hands of an elementary student. Christie should know this, or his entourage should take him behind the wood shed and educate him in the customs and courtesies to which he seems to have no interest or experience.

This is not the first time Christie has taken a shot at a Philadelphia sports team, and I daresay I don’t expect it to be his last. But the timing of the commentary was, shall we say, somewhat suspicious in nature? Since his embarassingly failed attempt to secure any support for the office of President of the United States, New Jersey constituents have grown fatigues and impatient with a governor who seems to have more interest in appearing in the owner’s box of a Dallas Cowboys game, than fixing the serious issues facing the state. The only thing sinking faster than his popularity among his state’s residents is his popularity among Philadelphia sports fans. Even with Republicans, his approval rating has dropped another 7 percent. Overall, 60 percent say the state of New Jersey is on the wrong track.

Since a governor cannot enter into international disputes easily to distract voters, Christie merely takes another periodic swing at a Philadelphia sports team.

Much like the image of Christie in the presence of Shaquille O’Neil, that’s just awfully small of you, Christie.  I don’t know you and I likely never will.  But since you’ve made it a career to use your podium to launch anti-Philadelphia bantor, I think you should know you are taking a very myopic and self-destructive path in public service.

So yourself a favor.  The next time you believe you have something witty to say to an open microphone about a Philadelphia sports team, especially the Sixers?  Don’t.  We already know how simple you are.  Try making us guess in the future.
