Scenario 3: Take Kris Dunn
There’s a lot of talk about two main prospects in this year’s draft. Rightfully so, Brandon Ingram and Ben Simmons probably are the two best athletes available. But would it be so surprising if the Sixers took Kris Dunn with their top overall pick?
Really, yes, it probably would be surprising. This would be the Sixers truly drafting for fit instead of best available. Dunn is good, but is he as good as Ingram or Simmons? Probably not, but with a lot of these prospects, you never know about What they could be in the NBA.
Dunn spent four seasons at Providence, but missed out on a large chunk of his sophomore year due to injury. In his final season at school, Dunn averaged 16.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game. He can shoot decently from beyond the arc and would offer some of the shooting that Brandon Ingram does while also filling the backcourt void.
Dunn fills an immediate void for Philly — the point guard void. The Sixers reportedly had a very good interview with him, and he has voiced his pleasure at the idea of playing in Philly.
Ish Smith was a solid stand-in over the last two seasons, but let’s be honest, he’s not the point guard of the future. Many believe Dunn is, but wasting the first overall pick on him seems to be wrong.
The likelihood of this scenario occurring, thankfully, is near zero.
