4 Teams Philadelphia 76ers Shouldn’t Trade With on Draft Night

Boston Celtics

It could be argued that a main reasoning for not wanting to trade to specific teams is because of what they don’t offer to you, but I believe that for a few teams, what they do have to offer is reason to refuse a trade. We need to think about what these teams are going to offer. For many of them, there is one main piece that is likely to be a focal point of the trade pitch from the opposing team’s side.

More from Draft

For the Boston Celtics, that focal point is likely to be the third overall draft pick. The Celtics could definitely make solid use of that pick, as several good players will still be available at that point in the NBA Draft, but what they will want in return for that pick will be large.

The Celtics were rumored to be inquiring about Jahlil Okafor at the trade deadline this season, and I believe that if the Celtics are discussing a trade with the Sixers, Okafor will again have to be involved for this to be likely. After reports came out since the regular season ended that either Okafor or Noel is likely to be moved this offseason, the Celtics will take a look at that and realize that they have the upper hand.

Yes, Boston wants Okafor, but Philly wants to get rid of Okafor even more than Boston wants him. So Philly will have to overpay. Okafor is worth more than third overall in this year’s draft, but that doesn’t mean that the Sixers can get a straight up deal done for the third pick using solely Okafor.

Not only will they have to send Okafor, but they may have to send an additional player, and possibly some additional draft picks in the future as well. What the Sixers would have to give up for just the third overall pick is huge.

I am a big believer in allowing Okafor and Noel stay on the team next season. Allow the pair to have another year to develop, and then see where you’re at. Trading Okafor for the third overall pick would be a move that the Sixers will look back on years from now and realize that it was not a good idea.
