Philadelphia’s point guard search should be centered around a compliment to Ben Simmons, not a pure passer.

The Sixers’ point guard chase this off season is unique in a number of ways. Not only will they be essentially out of the running for the vast majority of seasoned veterans and upper echelon talents, but they’ll be seeking a compliment to a rookie power forward in Ben Simmons with court vision that hasn’t really been matched in recent draft classes and a personal passing aptitude that mimics that of a potentially elite point guard in the future.

They’re looking for secondary ball handlers, versatile defenders, and skilled off-ball scorers rather than someone who will come in and single-handedly orchestrate the offense, which is why some of the names I chose came to mind.

A hybrid guard who can knock down threes and defend either guard spot is going to be far more valuable than a pure passer from the Sixers’ perspective, and it seems as if Bryan Colangelo has a solid grasp on that concept. Whether or not they end up overspending is yet to be determined, but there are a number of affordable options available who could mold well with Philly’s rotation, even if they don’t have the same name recognition or track record as some of the more prominent targets.

In any case, it’s no longer a traditional point guard job opening, and that may require the team to become a little creative.
