19. SG Grayson Allen, Duke

Grayson Allen will be part of a loaded Duke team this year, but will likely still be given ample opportunities to make his case to NBA teams as the Blue Devils’ veteran leader of sorts on the perimeter. After a strong season in his sophomore year that likely would’ve placed him into the later stages of the first round this year, Allen decided to return to Duke, citing his love for the university.

While his stock may not rise given the influx of talent in this year’s draft class, Allen’s ability as a player shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s somewhat undersized for the two-guard, but understands how to maneuver his way around the court and was arguably the most effective offensive player with Duke last season, often looking more polished than second overall pick Brandon Ingram.

Allen utilizes a quick first step and explosive athleticism to get by the defense and create space. He’s a reliable outside shooter both off the catch and off the dribble, and has excellent touch around the basket when he’s able to find a driving lane. While he can seem somewhat narrow-minded at times, Allen is one of the better pure scorers in the draft as it stands.

He has excellent handles that allow him to create space without turning the ball over excessively, and he’s capable of knocking down a myriad of shots from multiple angles at any given time. His upside may seem limited in some facets, but as a scoring spark off the bench or playing off ball as a tertiary scoring option, there are few players who can match Allen’s aptitude.

Defensively, Allen is in a jam to some extent in terms of finding the best position for him, but he should be able to overcome that. He has the lateral quickness needed to stay with either guard spot, and is a fiery player when motivated on the court. His motor could be a bit more consistent on that side of the ball, but when it’s on, he is among the most aggressive players on the court.
