17. PF Isaiah Hartenstein, Zalgiris
Hartenstein, flaws and all, is another skilled European who has all the fundamental skills needed to build an NBA career off of. The 18-year-old has been stellar at international camps and during his tenure with Zalgiris’ 18-U team, showcasing mobility and skill that few forwards his age possess.
Standing at 6-11 with wide shoulders and a solid build, Hartenstein already has the physical attributes to compete at the next level once he comes from overseas. He has excellent touch around the hoop in combination with a nice set of hook shots and turnaround jumpers that he’s able to utilize consistently around the basket. He can get tunnel vision at times and force up ill-advised shots when not fully engaged in the outcome of the game, but should be able to improve his decision making as he matures and is placed alongside more adequate talent.
He’s also a fluid athlete who can attack his man off the bounce from the perimeter. He has shown flashes of being a knockdown shooter from deep in time, but still hasn’t found the consistency that often comes with prospects a few years older than he is. He has the ideal skill set and physical attributes of somebody who can be molded into the ideal modern stretch four, it’s simply a matter of further development- something we could see this upcoming season overseas and he moves up a level in competition.
Defensively, Hartenstein’s fluidity in motion and ability to stretch out to the perimeter is a huge boost. He won’t protect the rim all that much and could certainly improve his toughness in some scenarios, but has all the tools to be an efficient switch defender without giving up too much ground to smaller players.
