7. SF Robert Covington

Covington is another second round pick turned functional NBA player that has thrived during Philly’s rebuild, emerging as one of the team’s more consistent offensive threats and a viable multipositional defender. Standing around 6-9, Covington’s ability to cover a wide array of positions while taking on numerous roles in the offense has been a massive boost for Brett Brown, and should only become more helpful as the team improves around him.

In terms of floor spacing, Covington has been one of the lone options the Sixers have been able to rely on in recent years, making his inclusion in a revamped rotations alongside facilitators like Simmons and Rodriguez plenty enticing. He has been stuck as a quasi-go-to option in a flawed offensive system throughout his career, and the fact that he’s been able to come up with the success he has is impressive in it’s own right.

As a versatile wing scorer who can put the ball on the floor and get into the lane or spot-up with consistency, Covington is set to be one of the Sixers’ most important offensive cogs, especially if Bryan Colangelo commits to him as a long term solution in the rotation. He gives them the spacing they need to run the offense through Simmons, while offering the positional flexibility they need to mold the lineups around different in-game scenarios. He’s one of those unique players who can thrive just as much in a small ball rotation as he can when the offense slows down, and has all the budding tools needed to be a fine NBA player for years to come.

Covington hasn’t fine tuned every aspect of his offensive game, especially when it comes to finishing off possesions around the basket, but he has more than cemented himself as one of the more well-rounded youngsters on Philly’s roster. He won’t carry the offense or launch the Sixers to the next level per say, but he’s the type of glue guy who can help connect the proverbial dots around him in an offensive system.

He can play numerous spots and fill numerous roles on the court, all depending on the benefit of the team around him. He’s a smart young player, and could end up higher on these rankings if some of the Sixers’ rookies don’t pan out to their fullest potential.
