With Kendall Marshall traded to Utah Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers have a 4th center on roster. Will Tibor Pleiss be cut, or does team have ulterior motives?
It started with Nerlens Noel. Then came Joel Embiid. Next came Jahlil Okafor. Finally, Tibor Pleiss?
Chronologically, that’s the order of transactions of the Philadelphia 76ers in filling the lineup spot of their center position. Ranking the depth chart is an altogether different matter.
This is most likely what it appears. The Utah Jazz needed some salary cap relief, so they decided to trade 7-foot-3 center Tibor Pleiss and his $2,800,000 guaranteed salary, plus two second round 2017 draft picks, to the Philadelphia 76ers for Kendall Marshall and his $2,000,000 NOT guaranteed salary.
Minutes after the trade was announced, the Jazz followed through and cut Kendall Marshall. $2,800,000 is now off their books.
So it’s clear what the Utah Jazz were doing. But what of the Philadelphia 76ers? Let’s ignore the obvious for the few moments that we can do so, and let our imaginations run wild. If we abandon all common sense, we can arrive in three places. Keep in mind that these are the zaniest scenarios conceivable, and so you are forewarned that this will not make sense to you. But its the weekend, and you need something less “newsish” at this point in your day, right? So what are these zany scenarios?
(1) Joel Embiid had a setback
(2) The Philadelphia 76ers are about to trade a center
(3) Tibor Pleiss is worth developing
Let’s let our imagination run wild on this occasion.
