What If the Sixers Copied the Celtics’ Rebuild Part 1
The only way the Sixers could have truly copied the Celtics’ rebuild, is in an alternate universe where Allen Iverson never left the Sixers and only had a minor decline with age.
In this parallel universe scenario, former Sixers general manager and Brooklyn Nets general manager during the 2013 offseason Billy King is desperate to relive the good olds days when Iverson was leading a team he managed to the playoffs. That would compel King to offer the same trade to the Sixers for Iverson that he offered to the Celtics in our universe. We know that never happened. So, let’s look at more realistic ways the Sixers could follow the Celtics.
One thing to consider when comparing the Celtics’ rebuild plan to the Sixers’ rebuild plan, is to focus on the similarities.
The main goal of both teams is to do everything to get an NBA superstar. All the while maintaining the ability to build a championship team around that player after giving up a lot to get him. The price to get that player could involve being okay receiving several losses, trading away All-Star players, trading away draft picks, or saving enough money to have the right amount of cap space to sign a great free agent.
From the 2013 offseason to the 2015 draft, the biggest change is that the Sixers would sign average to below average players instead of D-Leaguers.
