From foot fracture, to Jones Fracture, from progress to setback, the Philadelphia 76ers have had conflicting messages about Ben Simmons‘ recovery. The only way to certify his progress is to ship him to Aspetar Clinic in Qatar.

Ben Simmons is one of several key players for the Philadelphia 76ers. He joins Joel Embiid in the class of “through-t-e roof talent elite franchise-changing players” category. That’s the level where the team should weigh medical decisions carefully, conservatively, considering all factors. The team should try to maintain a normal healing track for their star rookie.

But bone marrow injections are not normal. In fact, the event signifies that healing is not going “according to plan”.  In fact, the introduction of bone marrow injections into the treatment protocol suggests that the fracture is not healing.

Bone Marrow Very Successful

Now this is not to say that healing will NOT occur.  Researching Jones’ Fractures revealed that it is a problematic area to heal in elite professional athletes due to the limits of nourishing blood flow to the region.  As you recall, the matter was originally addressed all the way back in October 2016.

At the time of the diagnosis, there were no indications the fracture would not heal normally. Even now, with clinical results of 19 out of 20 patients receiving the bone marrow supplement achieving full recovery, there is that unexpressed fear of setback.

Joel Embiid Aspetar

The Philadelphia 76ers have worked with problematic foot health with an elite athlete in the past. When Joel Embiid needed the very best, the Philadelphia 76ers sent him to rehab at Aspetar Clinic. His experience there was profoundly productive, validated the team’s efforts by ensuring he was seen by the best available treatment, and he was not only aided in the health of his foot, but in the monitoring of his training and body mechanics as well.

Ben Simmons is equally vital to the future of the franchise, has experienced a setback in his recovery, and is in need of that “expertise” which Aspetar is famous for. When Embiid completed his Aspetar work, everything progressed normally.

The Extra Mile

Perhaps it’s overkill.  Perhaps the track of Ben Simmons has no imperative to send him to Aspetar Clinic as Joel Embiid had gone before him. But fans have been dealt serious blows to the trust factor with the current front office.  A fanbase that has been overly patient, incredibly supportive, and extraordinarily sharp, has been let down repeatedly in the past six months.

The public relations value is worth the investment. The peace of mind to the front office and the fanbase is in need of a boost.  But ultimately, the results matter in returning Ben Simmons to the NBA as a healthy no-restrictions player.

Ben Simmons is a vital component to any future championship plans for the Philadelphia 76ers. As such, he should be given the best of care available, and the team should be willing to remove all doubt.  Aspetar Clinic should not be the option for all players.  But in the shadow of Joel Embiid’s success there, it should be a mandate for Ben Simmons now.
