The Risk Of Doing Too Much

But even more perilous of doing too little this off-season is trying to do too much.  Or say too much.

The Philadelphia 76ers will get Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons back next year. As we witnessed this year, the arrival of two red-shirted rookies this season meant all the difference for the team.  Two or three pieces from the NBA Draft, allow one or two roster spots to fill with surprises in the 2017 NBA Summer league, and we’ll be set.

We do not need a media blitz on what the team “intends” to do. Until other teams are locked in on the other side of any player or draft trades, it won’t go down like that.

Preserve The Core

Also, the roster is fine at the core. As players heal, the team gets better. The team will likely lose Sergio Rodriguez due to expired contract. The team might even look to deal off the injured Jerryd Bayless and recall Furkan Korkmaz.

But this is not a team that needs sweeping changes, anymore than young cornstalks need 70 mph winds.   In the end, trust Brett Brown’s counsel on the roster. On one hand, give him players he can develop. On the other hand, ensure they are healthy enough to play for us.

The Philadelphia 76ers are in far better shape than they have been for years.  But this is a very important off-season. Stick to the script, and the team will be fine.
