Mitchell has rocketed up draft standings this past month, as his combination of elite athleticism and explosive scoring prowess have provided a catalyst for a rather extensive run of Louisville success. Although he’s somewhat undersized for the two-guard spot at 6-3, his ability to both initiate the offense on occasion, as well as utilize both his strength and athletic tools to outmatch larger opposition, helps counteract that.

Offensively, Mitchell has evolved from a streaky shooter to one of the NCAA’s most constant threats in recent months. He’s shooting 40.2 percent from 3-point range in conference play this season, compared to a mere 23.1 during his freshman campaign. The sophomore has also operated at the point guard spot at times this season — an attribute of his game that was almost nonexistent last season.

Previous Ranking: 25

He’s scoring at all levels offensively, accompanying that improved shooting with excellent prowess as a slasher. He utilizes his quick first step to make brisk moves to the basket, and on more than one occasion has showcased his leaping ability with brief — yet exhilarating — forays above the rim. He’s a dynamic scoring option, and the fact that he has been able to work that in with improved creation for others is a massive positive for his draft stock heading into March.

In case you were wondering about exactly how athletic Mitchell is, here’s a solid example:

The man has wings.

He also defenders both guard spots well, especially for a player of his size. He’ll always hold a slight height disadvantage against a number of natural two-guards, but his aggressiveness and solid core help him matchup far better than most.
