With the 39th pick of the 2017 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select….
Syracuse small forward/power forward Tyler Lydon is projected as the sleeper pick of the 2017 NBA Draft by Sixer Sense’s Ethan Piechota. Coincidentally, we arrived at the same conclusion independently. (Great minds think alike, you know).
FanSided
Lydon is a very versatile forward who has enough skill to contribute in virtually every aspect of the game. Think of Dario Saric without that mustache and you’re on the right track. He is a 6-foot-10 215 pound 21 year-old who can slide in to the small forward role or pop out to the power forward assignment. And he can do so because he has a beautiful three-point shot which will only improve over time in the NBA. As such, he immediately projects as a stretch-four on the Philadelphia 76ers. But that is just what gets him into the NBA.
He has a jack-of-all-trades physicality and mindset. He is that type of player who garners trust in key moments in the game purely from his never-taking-a-break hustle. In Philadelphia, the fans love a player who gives his all. Tyler Lydon may not be on the board at 39, but if he is, he is a steal.
Bryant
Indiana center Thomas Bryant is another player who has tremendous upside. He is rated as the biggest sleeper in this draft at the center position by Nelson, and I concur. In fact, I highlighted Bryant as a potential pick in the 2017 NBA Draft back in 2016. In all honesty, all those months ago, many of us had Bryant identified as a potential star in the making.
Christopher Kline, who can rattle off the names and attributes of practically the top 100 NBA prospects in his sleep, reiterated his believe in Bryant as a solid pick-up for the 76ers. So what is the fuss all about? Bryant is a 6-foot-11 center who has the makings of a stretch-five. He has great positioning on the boards and performs well in the physical aspects of the game. But that 7-foot-5 wingspan combined with his sheer strength give him all the tools of a Nerlens Noel / Jahlil Okafor hybrid in the paint. And that combination is definitely worth a second pick to see how it develops.
