Former Philadelphia 76ers point guard Larry Drew II Draws renewed Philadelphia 76ers interest for 2017 Summer League

The Philadelphia 76ers have enjoyed a good track record with their Summer League Teams in the past. In fact, the performance of previous summer league competition has launched players from hopeful to full NBA player status.

Just ask T.J. McConnell.

So the recent announcement regarding the Philadelphia 76ers signing point guard Larry Drew still carries some optimism for the team and the fans of the Philadelphia 76ers.

So what can we glean from this signing?

Essential Elements of Information

Several things, to be exact.  The move to point guard suggests that the team will not be asking T.J. McConnell to participate in the summer league.  Last summer, the team saw performances from McConnell, Nik Stauskas, Richaun Holmes and Christian Woods.  This year, don’t look for many veterans to be participating in the Summer League.

  • So that means that the team will likely be sending up to five drafted players to join the summer league roster.  That leaves the other nine roster spots up in the air. So why Larry Drew II?

Well, the NBA Draft has many options.  But this suggests that the team will look at a front court, and not a point guard, option with the third pick of the 2017 NBA Draft.  How so? Why sign a player to compete for playing time with the top rookie selection?   Drew II could indicate the team is leaning towards a front court player at three.

Is Larry Drew II worth investigating?

He’s actually pretty good. While he only appeared in 12 NBA games in 2015, he delivers as a field general with great handles on the ball.   Since that time, he has played for BC Neptūnas in Lithuania. Most recently, he signed with the Sioux City Skyforce in March 2017.

    Drew Can Do Ball Movement

And if you like ball movement, you’d better get Larry Drew II in for a look.  You see, he’s a smooth passing point guard who can dish like he was born with the skill.

The Philadelphia 76ers ended the 2016-2017 season seventh in the league with assists at 23.7. This year may be even better ball movement in rookie Ben Simmons‘ era.   So it falls to reason that the team will need a good floor general.

He’s always had great instincts, ball movement, and basketball IQ. If he has mastered some offense, defense, and a three-point shot to match, this could end very well for both the Philadelphia 76ers and Larry Drew II.
