Why the Philadelphia 76ers need to acquire Evan Fournier

On a Philadelphia 76ers team that lacks consistent play from the shooting guard position and possesses cap space, it makes sense to for the Sixers to acquire Orlando’s Evan Fournier in a trade.

Since the NBA introduced the three-point line, no team has been a successful contender without a good three point shooter since the ’94 Knicks who rolled out the anti-Death Lineup in Harper, Starks, Anthony Mason, Charles Oakley and Patrick Ewing. That lineup couldn’t even hit the far side of a barn past the three point lineup. It still amazes me that team took Olajuwon’s Rockets to SEVEN games in the finals.

The Philadelphia 76ers are no exception to this rule. The Sixers have struggled to shoot well from the field since “The Process” has begun. Despite shooting many threes, the Sixers struggle as a team to convert them. Since “The Process” begun, the Sixers as a team have ranked 30th, 29th, 25th, and 23rd. For a team that has constantly played at a high pace, this is unacceptable.

With the NBA draft approaching, many view this as a time to select shooting. Malik Monk is a great prospect, I love him a ton. I wrote a whole article about why he should be the third pick.

However, Monk is still a flawed player and still might not be the final piece. That final piece could be Evan Fournier and here’s why the 76ers must acquire the French Sharpshooter.

Background about Evan Fournier

Fournier was drafted by Denver with the 20th pick in the 2012 Draft. In Denver, Fournier sparingly played, only being known as the only player in NBA history to wear #94 when in the Mile High City.

During the 2014 NBA Draft, Fournier was traded to Orlando in exchange for Aaron Afflalo. In Orlando, Fournier broke out, averaging 15 points a game during his 2nd season in Orlando. It was the last offseason where Orlando had this weird thought that they were a potential playoff team that resulted with Fournier getting a 5 year, $85 million dollar deal.

Last season, the Magic struggled, as any team would when they believe that Aaron Gordon is the next Paul George. Fournier struggled to get good looks, which happens when your point guard is Elfred Payton. His shooting percentages went down, despite the fact that his averages increase.

Now with Orlando entering another rebuild under a new general manager, the time to strike is now.
