On one hand, the NBA owners are not stupid. The NBA is a business after all.
On the other hand, the owners of struggling teams have witnessed the way the often-cold Philadelphia 76ers fans warmed up to the rebuild and have seen the results in record ticket sales this year.
The NBA quicksand
This is a turnaround story folks. Ticket sales were already down. The team had exhausted salary cap space, traded away rights to most of the draft picks, and was stuck in the recycle loop of hoping to attract undervalued free agents.
Teams like the Philadelphia 76ers get caught in the quicksand of NBA limbo and slowly sinking down. Any course of action attempting immediate relief simply sank the team more rapidly. In fact, it was the numerous attempts to turn the team around which had the team up to its neck in futility.
Hinkie’s solved the stalemate so simply that it evaded everyone’s attention. Don’t struggle. Sink as quickly as you can. Hit bedrock, and begin to rebuild everything about the team simultaneously. The most attractive feature for an NBA owner? No overpaying on contracts. The team becomes frugal with expenses and tradeable assets.
