TSS writer Ken Jaskulski chronicles his experiences behind the visitor’s bench at Philadelphia 76ers games.

With apologies to Star Trek fans, these are the continuing stories of the Philadelphia 76ers season ticket holders in Section 124, behind the visitor’s bench. Their mission is to seek out and distract visiting players, keep Brett Brown in check, and harass and berate the officials as they have never been harassed before.

The stories are factual however some names have been changed to protect the guilty and avoid arrest warrants. Most fans in Section 124 have had the same seats for decades and converse with the visiting players and coaches. Last week’s home games were Memphis and Minnesota.

Grizzlies, Mar. 21

The Memphis game was the night of the snow storm so only about 8,000 people attended the game. The Section fans tried to ride Marc Gasol because he is the only player on Memphis worth riding, but Gasol wouldn’t have any of it. He didn’t even turn around and smile (or even flip a bird).

Maybe Gasol was day dreaming because he sure played like he was in a fog. Gasol played only 25 minutes scoring five points with six rebounds and four assists.

Timberwolves, Mar. 24

The Minnesota game was a different story. The Section fans, led by ringleaders Al and Kenny, got all over Coach Tom Thibodeau and assistant coach Rick Brunson. The main comments centered around the fact that, without Jimmy Butler, their team will go out in the first round. Brunson responded that we (the Sixers) will be going out in the first round with everyone playing.

SECTION 124 ARCHIVES

Since writers have a 250-word minimum, we have to reach our minimum by providing this gem of a story from our Section 124 Archives. The year is 1993 and then-Sixers coach John Lucas had a special pre-season meeting (which yours truly attended). At the meeting Lucas introduced first round selection Shawn Bradley.

The coach invited people from the stands to try to come out and score on Bradley. After Bradley blocked a couple of shots from some 40-year-old fat guys who thought they could still ball, a high school kid walked to the foul line to accept the Bradley challenge. This kid wasn’t even six feet tall.

The kid gave a shot fake at the foul line that Bradley went for, drove around Bradley and shot a reverse layup so he couldn’t recover and block the shot. Just like that this high school kid scored. I turned to my friend and we both said to each other at the same time “we’re in trouble”. History buffs know how the Bradley story ended.
