Roundtable: Thoughts on Bryan Colangelo’s alleged burner accounts
Dan Volpone
This is really funny. It’s also really bad.
Joel’s unhappy (he said so himself on instagram). Players have said they wouldn’t trust Colangelo. What free agent would want to come be a part of this mess?
The Ringer report included screenshots of tweets, and all of the Eric jr tweets are still public and easily combed through. The accounts harshly criticized current and former players, trash-talked former-GM and eternal savior Sam Hinkie, and talked about injury and trade details that were unknown by reporters close to the team.
It’s starting to look more and more like Eric jr and the gang may belong to Bryan Colangelo’s wife and not Bryan himself. Which is still really serious. Colangelo would have been disclosing sensitive team information about injuries and trades to a person leaking all of that onto social media.
But regardless of who ran the burners, this is so weird you have to laugh. A multimillionaire felt the need to set up a fake Twitter account to, among other things, defend Colangelo’s collars (which, by the way, are way too tall).
This would never happen in a well-run, nepotism free organization. But the Sixers are clearly a mess under the Colangelos, and the plot of NBA 2K18’s MyGM has come to life.
There’s really only one way to recover from this. The Sixers are going to “investigate,” but ultimately Colangelo needs to be fired and a competent GM needs to be brought in at least a few weeks before the draft and free agency hit. To meet that timeline, Colangelo needs to be out with an expedited search beginning by this time next week.
The Sixers just recently became the favorites (over Cleveland) to land LeBron James this summer. Hopefully this doesn’t mess that up. And hopefully whoever is brought in next can regain the trust of the players.
