The Philadelphia 76ers lack of a general manager has had a major impact on the franchise’s unimpressive offseason moves thus far.

By no stretch of the imagination has the Philadelphia 76ers had a bad offseason. However, this offseason has been somewhat disappointing from the aspect of the Sixers making a big move. While some things were not within the control of the 76ers organization, there’s a strong correlation between the absence of a general manager and the lack of strong moves this summer. It’s been evident as the offseason has progressed thus far.

Now the Sixers were left without a GM after the whole scandal with Bryan Colangelo and his Twitter-ready-fingers wife went down. Colangelo may not have been the best president of basketball operations for the club, but he did provide some stability. While it was right for Philadelphia to move on from Colangelo, the club should have filled his vacancy much quicker.

Now, discussing whether or not the moves that have been made might have been better executed if a GM were in place, it’s kinda pointless. There are too many variables when reviewing the moves made, however having a GM might have helped the Sixers land a superstar via trade or free agency. Having someone in place who is the number one guy in charge would have helped the Sixers in the moves that they did or didn’t this offseason.

Bringing in a new GM would have also completely wiped any lingering Colangelo vibes from the organization. The Sixers lost some credibility with the Colangelo scandal and bringing in a new GM would have gone a long way in restoring that credibility.

Better credibility with a new GM could have help the club in pursuing top free agents. Having a GM in place might have prevented Nemanja Bjelica from backing out of the agreement that he and the club came to, however that’s just speculation.

It’s probably too late to purpose a top name player via trade until the regular season begins in October. Hopefully by then, the Philadelphia 76ers have a new GM in place. While head coach and interim front office leader Brett Brown has done admirably running the franchise, it’s clear that the Sixers were lacking a front office executive with credibility that could have taken the team by the reigns during this offseason.
