Fernando was garnering some first round buzz this summer before pulling out of the draft. A physically imposing big, he will now step into a bigger role with Maryland in his second season. His defensive presence will capture the attention of NBA teams.

At 7-foot with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, Fernando projects as a quality shot-blocker with a physical mature frame. He can also function as a rim-runner offensively, finishing lobs at the rim and operating in the pick-and-roll.

In a league that’s becoming increasingly versatile, bigs of Fernando’s ilk are no longer at a premium. With that said, his ability to protect the rim, compete on the glass and play his role offensively still has value.

Another season of development should do Fernando well. Expect to see him in the first-round discussion next June.
