Small Forward

Starter

It’s likely the NBA first team All-Defense player will retain his starting spot from last season. Robert Covington is one of the best defensive wings in the NBA and on top of that a solid 3-point shooter. His ability to switch defensively through four positions is something too valuable for the Philadelphia 76ers not to have in their starting five.

Primary reserve

As mentioned on the previous slide, Smith will miss the beginning portion of the season. If he was healthy, he would have been a great understudy and substitute for Covington. Smith’s defensive potential was on full display during his lone season at college and would fit in naturally with the 76ers defensive philosophy.

However due to Smith’s injury, Wilson Chandler will likely come off the bench as the team’s second unit small forward to begin the season. Chandler was one of the biggest offseason acquisitions for the team and his ability to play both forward positions have given the club some breathing room with Smith’s injury.

Rest of depth

The only other players that can play small forward that can come off the bench for the Sixers is Korkmaz and Milton.  However, Korkmaz is still developing and may not be ready for big minutes yet.

Sadly, as previously mentioned, Milton’s on a two-way contract so he will be limited in his ability to provide depth. Most likely if the 76ers get in trouble at this position and need extra depth for a extended period of time they will have to make room one way or another to add someone who can provide full time coverage at the small forward spot.
