3. Fringe roster battle
The Sixers currently have 15 guaranteed roster spots. That means Emeka Okafor, Norvel Pelle and Anthony Brown — who are currently on training camp deals — will be fighting an uphill battle in their quest for a full-time spot.
Demetrius Jackson and Shake Milton already occupy the Sixers’ two-way contract slots.
Okafor should pique the Sixers interest, however, as he put together a solid campaign with the Pelicans last season. After hanging around the Sixers’ G-League squad, Okafor averaged 4.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.0 block in 13.6 minutes per game with New Orleans.
He made an impact on defense and looked the part of a legitimate 15th man. The Sixers can still open up a spot via Jerryd Bayless, who isn’t thrilled with his current role. Stretching the final $8.6 million on Bayless’ contract is an option.
Jamal Crawford has been connected to the Sixers all summer, even proclaiming his desire to play in South Philly. But we’re in training camp and there aren’t many rumblings about potential Crawford suitors. Maybe the Sixers just aren’t interested, and rightfully so.
If that’s the case, Okafor has the best chance to carve out a roster spot with a strong training camp. If he looks good in the scrimmage, that will only help his case. Okafor will be 36 when the season starts, beginning his 11th NBA campaign (if he finds a team).
