1. Markelle Fultz’s … everything
After a long summer, this will be Markelle Fultz’s first live action on a public stage. The early returns on his jumper will undoubtedly be the focus of most Sixers fans, both at the arena and at home.
In limited action last season, Fultz thoroughly avoided the three-point line. He attempted just one, end-of-quarter three in 14 games. That’s after shooting 41.3 percent on 5.0 attempts per game at Washington.
Now, after a summer of work with Drew Hanlen, Fultz’s mechanics are different. He’s making the transition to a one-motion shot, featuring a lower shooting pocket and a more crisp release. The first video evidence of that shot was promising, albeit imperfect.
That video only showed Fultz shooting spot-up jumpers in an open gym, though. We still haven’t seen the shot translate against actual defense in a high-pressure setting. The scrimmage should be a relaxed environment, but Fultz will be under a microscope in any setting.
In addition to his shooting prowess, fans should monitor Fultz’s confidence. That’s just as important as his mechanics. If he’s willing to create his own offense and seek out perimeter shots, it almost doesn’t matter if they’re going in at this point.
Fultz also flashed special playmaking ability last season, something he can build on moving forward. He’s one of the best young passers in the NBA, as well as an elite ball handler with several advanced dribble moves.
That shouldn’t be overlooked. Fultz has more than enough talent to justify his draft slot in the long run.
UPDATE: The scrimmage was postponed due to weather-related issues at the Palestra.
