3. Sixers have an elite defensive trio

After finishing with a top-five defense last season, the Sixers are on track to hit that mark again in 2019. Wilson Chandler will eventually add to their depth, while Fultz’s length is a welcomed addition to the starting five (even if his offensive struggles aren’t).

Anchoring their scheme, of course, is Embiid, Covington and Simmons — all three of whom are targeting All-Defense nominations. Embiid and Covington both received that honor last season, and Simmons is well on his way this season.

Embiid is an elite shot-blocker with impressive instincts around the rim. Using his 7-foot-2 frame to deter shots and influence drivers, his presence alone makes the Sixers a better two-way team than most.

On the perimeter, Covington’s quick hands and length are integral to the Sixers’ defensive success. Embiid gets a lot of credit for his work underneath, but Covington is supremely valuable as a switchable defender who can guard the opposition’s best player and create turnovers.

Simmons, however, is taking the biggest leap. After displaying his defensive potential last season, the 6-foot-10 point guard has taken it to another level in the Sixers’ first two games. He’s active both on and off the ball, walling off ball handlers and jumping into passing lanes.

If Fultz reaches his defensive ceiling and Chandler makes a healthy return to the rotation, the Sixers will harbor arguably the best defensive core in the NBA. Toronto, Utah and Boston all boast elite defenses, but the Sixers have the ability to match up.
