5. ‘Brand’ the Sixers

Since Elton Brand was named the new general manager of the 76ers after the draft and free agency period were over, he did not have a chance to put much of an imprint on the current roster.

None of the 15 players on the team were brought in by him, which means he can have a fresh perspective on the club’s needs. He has made it clear , in his mind, this roster is far from a finished product.

Right before the start of the season, here is part of what he told NBC Sports:

"“Honestly, I say we have a lot of work to do. We’re not where I want to be right now. I’m not sure what the players feel about that. I know coach wants to see more growth and improvement. We have a lot to work on.”"

Sounds like a man who is not going to be content representing the club at community events.

But how much can Brand change things? Unlike predecessors Sam Hinkie and Bryan Colangelo, he is not coach Brett Brown’s superior, both he and Brown report directly to managing owner Joshua Harris.

What if Brand is offered what he feels is a good deal for point guard T.J. McConnell, a Brown favorite, and the coach objects?

Brand, unlike the others in Sixers management, does not have to defend any past deals and he has made it plain this is an unfinished product.

Probably not yet, as all teams are feeling out their rosters, but come December, Brand needs to start looking at ways to improve the team.
