Philadelphia 76ers: 5 reasons to love the Jimmy Butler trade
4. Maximizing Dario Saric’s value
Saric never quite fit with the Sixers. Entering the draft as a highly regarded playmaker, the Croatian forward was relegated to a spot-up shooting role next to Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. His defense was a sore spot last season (and early this season), especially against more versatile groups.
Despite his productivity on both ends, Saric’s second contract was always an underrated point of concern. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the 24-year-old might command an extension somewhere in the $16-20 million range per season.
That’s a lot to pay for a questionable fit with severe defensive limitations. The Sixers, given their desire to add another star and eventually extend Simmons, probably aren’t willing to spend that money. Trading him relieves the issue.
Saric was an important part of the Sixers’ budding core, but his potential (and contract) was never going to peak in Philadelphia. He’s better off getting more opportunities elsewhere, and the Wolves can afford to give him more freedom on offense.
Cashing in Saric and Covington for a top-15 NBA player was, again, the smart move.
