5 complementary pieces the Philadelphia 76ers can still target via trade
3. Wayne Ellington, Miami Heat
The Heat find themselves in a tough position — struggling to win games with average talent and several bad contracts. Miami will probably make a run at the playoffs, but right now, the Heat aren’t trending in the right direction.
Wayne Ellington is someone the Sixers should target as a result. While Ellington’s one-year contract doesn’t hurt Miami’s cap sheet, the Heat might be willing to part with him for some young pieces.
A Philly native, Ellington would fit seamlessly in the Sixers’ rotation. He’s an elite off-ball shooter, constantly relocating, cutting and working his way to open space. In the same mold as Redick and Shamet, Ellington can keep the floor spaced for the Sixers’ core.
Showcasing remarkable consistency, Ellington is shooting 39.2 percent from three-point range on 7.5 attempts per game — the exact same numbers as last season. If the Sixers can pry him from Miami, it’s a no-brainer.
Since Patton came to Philadelphia via trade, he can’t get moved with another player until Jan. 11, which means the Sixers couldn’t pull the trigger tomorrow. Still, the Heat get two young pieces with no long-term cap hits, which might peak Pat Riley‘s interest.
The Sixers would, however, see their roster shrink to 13 players. That would open the door for another trade or make the buyout market even more important. Ellington would take minutes from Korkmaz (duh) and Shamet.
