Coach of the Year: Nick Nurse, Toronto Raptors

2. Mike Budenholzer, Milwaukee Bucks

3. Doc Rivers, Los Angeles Clippers

The Raptors are pacing the NBA at 20-5, and Nick Nurse deserves a lot of credit. The Raptors upgraded from DeMar DeRozan to Kawhi Leonard, but it typically takes time for star-caliber pieces to gel. Toronto has been the clear top team since day one.

As the season progresses, Boston, Philadelphia and Milwaukee might pose more viable threats to the Raptors’ Eastern Conference throne. The Celtics have the talent and versatility to match up, they just lack cohesion on the offensive end. That will come in time.

For now, though, Toronto is a safe bet to finish No.1 in the conference. The Raptors look even better than last season’s group, and with LeBron James no longer patrolling the postseason waters, there’s reason to believe more playoff success is on the way.

Mike Budenholzer was the early favorite, but the Bucks have regressed in recent weeks. They’re still in the No. 2/3 spot, though, and 50+ wins (plus a Giannis MVP bid) should leave Bud firmly in the discussion.

Doc Rivers has the Clippers tied for first in the Western Conference. That might not last, but expectations were low for the post-Lob City Clips. At their current pace, a playoff bid — and perhaps even home-court advantage — is on the table.

Brett Brown probably cracks the top five, with room to move up if the Sixers’ recent success under Jimmy Butler continues.
